DJ KnowHow - Straatwaarde
DJ KNOWHOW, Iwan Den Boestert, can be seen as one of the founders of the dutch Hip/Hop Scene standing at the beginning of the cross from undergound to more accepted music for a wider range of listeners. He produced the first albums of 2 other pioneers of these scene EXTINCE and BRAINPOWER including standards as SPRAAKWATER and DOOR MERG & BEEN. In November 2005 he signed a record deal with WALBOOMERS for an album deal. he was supposed to bring out an album in 2006..but it never came, untill now! its a very ninety-ish kinds hiphop also called boombap. he has a lotta oldschoolers on the album so im curious if he may teach todays youth a little something about a beauty called hiphop..
Knowhow uit Amsterdam was jarenlang de dj van het legendarische VPRO-radioprogramma Dutch Masters en je kent hem ook als producer van o.a. Spraakwater, Zoete Inval, Door Merg & Brain en Wat een Jinx is (en de Hi-reclamecampagne). Vorig jaar bracht Knowhow zijn label Cold Rock Stuff onder bij Walboomers Music maar het album dat toen beloofd werd, liet vooralsnog op zich wachten.Maar nu is ie dr eindelijk.Het is helemaal in de jaren negentig stijl,boombap dus.Waar hij als producer normaliter een track maakt voor een rapper of zanger,heeft hij ze voor zijn debuutalbum uitgenodigd voor specifieke tracks

Man Dies from 3-Day Gaming Binge
BEIJING) — A man in southern China appears to have died of exhaustion after a three-day Internet gaming binge, state media said Monday.
The 30-year-old man fainted at a cybercafe in the city of Guangzhou on Saturday afternoon after he had been playing games online for three days, the Beijing News reported.
Paramedics tried to revive him but failed and he was declared dead at the cafe, it said. The paper said that he may have died from exhaustion brought on by too many hours on the Internet.
The report did not say what the man, whose name was not given, was playing.
The report said that about 100 other Web surfers "left the cafe in fear after witnessing the man's death."
China has 140 million Internet users, second only to the United States. It is one of the world's biggest markets for online games, with tens of millions of players, many of whom hunker down for hours in front of PCs in public Internet cafes.

Q1: Please introduce yourself and tell the readers what you do for a living?
My name is Fats Shariff aka Fatsarazzi & I am a jack of all master of some…but my passion lies in Photography.
Q2: When and where (and maybe through whom) did you enter the world of hip hop and street culture?
Uhhh I would have to say I got into this culture through my own vocation & interest in what was stylish & fresh at the time. I think the 1st 12” that I bought of the Genre was ‘HipHopBeBopDon’tStop’ Man Parrish, & the 1st pair of sneaks that I cried for wear Nike Wimbledon…followed by Nike Bruins.
Q3: You know everybody in the scene. Could you tell us about your relationship with NYC, Berlin, Paris and London? What is your posse? When and how did you meet?
When you have been in this game/world for as long as I have countries have no borders & the culture is just that…the culture…a question of acting local but being global. I knew a lot of the London faces just from being in the scene & I met James from then UNION NYC 90/91 & a few years later ended up working for Stussy & Gimme 5, from there I met everyone, & have continues to do so.
NYC came from just being there & then working for BAPE, must have been 1994 or 95 I was in Tokyo & these 2 fellas Stash & Futura where there negotiating their deal with BAPE. We spent 2 weeks together & that created a bond that is still hard to break.
Europe is just a natural progression of those relationships, & sheer talent for what it is that I did then.
I do not have a posse as such & it is no entourage, we are a group of like-minded people that know as individuals we have some pull but as a unit, together we are a force to be reckoned with.
Q4: Factor of Three used to be your clothing production company. Why doesn’t it exist anymore and what did you learn about the Streetwear business?
Factor of Three….for 8 years Fof3Ltd was the company that you went to if you wanted the best custom made jersey in Europe & you wanted a style input & understanding…we were the shit. We were so much more than just a manufacturer. The market changed & the game got harder…our biggest & best customer Silas decided they had had enough & were not going not be dictated to by the market, so they quit. This out a dent in us & I did not want to bend to the industry…so we stopped.
Q5: What is important to stay in the business?
Be Flexible & but focus & be the best at your chosen field…do not be swayed by what others perceive to be your strengths.
Q6: If one would want to start a company in the Streetwear business what would you give him as advice?
Don’t do it!
Q7: A lot of people are starting now. Maybe they are tempted by fast money and hanging at cool parties. How is the reality?
I will not expand on that as everyones experience is different...that is my answer DON'T DO IT...I tell this to everyone every day!
If they think like that: DONT DO IT...sorry that is my answer too many out there already...if you have done your reasearch then go for it, but otherwise do something else.
Q8: Do you think like that for the whole fashion market or particularly streetwear as we know it (tees, hoodies, jeans and call it a collection - style)?
For the very same reasons you have said people want to get into it is exactly the same reason why streetwear is in such a fucking mess right now
Pretty much I feel the same for the whole industry...too many people get into it because they are dazzled by the so called fame & fortune, but are not prepared to take the shit that gets you there. just because there are many people that want to do this does not mean they are good.
Quantity, kills Quality!
Q9: I know you don`t like to point out names, especially not in a negative way. So do you see people that are still doing a good job in the (let`s say) streetwear business?
Of course there are a few that do it well, but they are & in some cases are still the instigators of Streetwear, Like RECON, SUPREME, FL & even. There are probably in my opinion no more than 10 really good 'Streetwear' Labels out there, & all are at the pinnacle of their game & all others emulate in some shape or form. Like the line from Nas 'No idea is original, there is nothing new under the sun...it's about the way it's done.'
Q10: What were the most remarkable changes hip hop and street culture went through since you are in the game? What was better in the old days? What is better now?
Let me be honest, there were less of us & there fore the creativity & originality was more apparent. Today there are so many labels it is hard to decipher what is the good & the bad…& so many are similar it is hard to pin point who the players are. As for Hip Hop, wow…it goes back to what KRS 1 said, ‘Rap is an Industry & Hip Hop is a way of life, a culture’ We are in the middle of the growth of the Formulated Rap Industry…there is very little Hip Hop out there. For me what is Hip Hop today is Mos Def, Mad Lib…gentlemen keeping it real. The music has lost its edge & has become the Pop music of today…you can see the formula….
Q11: What, When & Now is a very interesting project you have. Can you explain the readers that don’t know it what that is all about.
WW&N is a Style, Trend forecasting & inspirational company, we provide our clients with current tastes of London’s sub cultures, & direct on where style & trend is going. We do not aim to dictate as other trend companies do, we want to provide a parallel alternative to what is out there…break up the monotony, make it fresh again…& we are having some success. WW&N is a network of Designers & Artists who are at the edge of all that is London.
Q12: Photography - You are known for taking excellent pictures. What does photography mean to you. Is it more an art form or are you doing it for money?
1stly thanks & that is an interesting question…for me it is definitely an art form that I would like to get paid for. I do nothing for nothing…I have done that already, as Cedric the Entertainer says, ‘I’m a grown as man dog, I don’t fuck around’
Photography for me is all about making the viewer feel that they were actually there, they can see, hear, & taste, & even smell the image…I want to capture what makes us feel alive!!!
Q13: Tell us a bit more about your show in Bern. What can we expect?
What can I say…very different from most of my other work, & seeing it was for Mahamaya, we have a lot of Indian influence, but influences that cross over to what inspires me, packaging, books, statues…the everyday things that my Indian brothers & sisters use & perhaps take for granted.
But there are a few reportage shots from the Nights @ Wasserwerks…here it is about the people.
Q14: You seem to have a tight relationship with Switzerland, how come?
This is easy & all I will say is Giorgios Rafailis, that is it…he is Bern for me.
Q15: How did you meet Giorgios Rafailis a.k.a. Babag (Owner of Mahamaya)?
Long story...met in Saigon May 1993 & it involved, Water, Stoly & Orange Juice, & pack of 20 pre rolled Joints !
Q16: Why is your relationship still so tight after all these years and despite the distance?
I really do not know why, & if I could probably describe it, it would fall apart.

Q17: Can you tell me more about the traveling you did? Especially India and SE Asia? How is that?
Wow, that was 14 years ago when we went around Asia. Without going into to many details, I feel that travel is the best education, & I learned more about human beings & being alive in that year than all the years since. India & Asia are different for each person. Never 2 journeys are the same, so it is pointless for me to reflect what happened to me etc…but know this, I still hold the memories of then & they still feed me with great inspiration.
Q18: You are married to a beautiful woman and have 3 sons. How did you meet? How can you keep up with all the things you do plus having a family life?
I met my gorgeous wife (and she really is : ) ) in 1989 & she was the love interest of my flat mate. She was a model & very much part of the scene & was involved in the whole evolution of the International Stussy Tribe back in the late 80’s etc…I hated her & thought she was a stuck up model bitch. But one day I had the chance to actually spend a little tie with her & then I thought, ‘Hey she’s ok you know’ It’s a long & funny story, but in the end we ended up with each other after I had tried to sent my boy up with her. Hah…I asked her to marry me after the 2nd day together & we hadn’t even got naked yet !!! Now that was 15 years ago & 3 kids later.
The reason I manage to do all that I do is because of her & her understanding & more than that there is trust. Plus I become a real moody motherfucker if I do not get a road trip or 2 in the year.
With my photography gaining momentum looks like I will be away even more, & she will be cool with it, & them kids do not mind…it is an equation;
Dad goes away + Dad get’s paid = Dad gets us shit…
So I think they are happy for now : )
Q19: How does your wife feel when you take pictures of other womens asses?
She does not mind, it keeps me from hassling her, plus she knows I am such a pussy that if a girl did step to me, I would run a mile ha ha hah !
Q20: Do you have any goals you would like to achieve in the future? Personally and business wise?
I want to take the best pictures that I can & get paid for it…but really get paid !!!
Make WW&N the force to be reckoned with that I know it should be.
Be a good Old man to my boys…oh yeah & be a good husband blah blah blah : )
I am managing these things…but still need to get paid properly !!!
Q21: What do you call “really getting paid”? Like Terry Richardson gets paid maybe? What is your plan to get to this point? Any strategy, any advise?
I am always about getting paid...Indian you see, it is all about the cash. Yes eventually I would like bank like Terry, but I just want people to treat you with respect & not always haggle you down, that is what I mean by getting paid properly...be paid fairly for your worth. But I have now got an agent...& that is the beginning of a whole new world.
Remember this: No one will help you get where you want to go other than yourself.
You have to push and get yourself out in the public eye & then slowly... slowly you can start to climb...that is what I have been doing for 2 years plus...& if this agent does not work out, I will find the next...but you have got to push.
Q22: Does money get more important in life, the older you get? Or is it the other way around?
Who ever thinks money is not important has a healthy bank account. Money is the ultimate Tool, it is the oil that lubricates the foundation of our society...wake up, money is essential.
It is only natural that the older you get the more you have to pay for, your responsibilities increase so does your outlay. That is the only difference that I have found.
Q23: What are your ambitions for the next 2 to 5 years?
To not have any and live in the moment.
Q24: Who do you think is the most influential person/institution in global street wear? Why?
In my opinion there are too many wrong people influencing Streetwear, & they are there just by business chance & luck. There are many more people out there that do so much more that get no recognition…so I will not give anyone credit, because as I have said, there is no one person, but I will say this…My eldest son Che. I love to watch him find his style & adapt what he likes into his groove. That gives me more inspiration & influence than any label out there.
Q25: Do you like big butts or small butts? Do you like small boobs or big boobs? Which combination is best?
Hmm I am a man who likes the middle way...I like a woman who is a real woman...I am no lover of Size 0. But I love beauty & I love those that are not us men !

But one day I had the chance to actually spend a little tie with her & then I thought, ‘Hey she’s ok you know’ It’s a long & funny story, but in the end we ended up with each other after I had tried to sent my boy up with her. Hah…I asked her to marry me after the 2nd day together & we hadn’t even got naked yet !!! Now that was 15 years ago & 3 kids later.
The reason I manage to do all that I do is because of her & her understanding & more than that there is trust. Plus I become a real moody motherfucker if I do not get a road trip or 2 in the year.
With my photography gaining momentum looks like I will be away even more, & she will be cool with it, & them kids do not mind…it is an equation;

I am always about getting paid...Indian you see, it is all about the cash. Yes eventually I would like bank like Terry, but I just want people to treat you with respect & not always haggle you down, that is what I mean by getting paid properly...be paid fairly for your worth. But I have now got an agent...& that is the beginning of a whole new world.
Remember this: No one will help you get where you want to go other than yourself.
You have to push and get yourself out in the public eye & then slowly... slowly you can start to climb...that is what I have been doing for 2 years plus...& if this agent does not work out, I will find the next...but you have got to push.
Q22: Does money get more important in life, the older you get? Or is it the other way around?
Who ever thinks money is not important has a healthy bank account. Money is the ultimate Tool, it is the oil that lubricates the foundation of our society...wake up, money is essential.
It is only natural that the older you get the more you have to pay for, your responsibilities increase so does your outlay. That is the only difference that I have found.

In my opinion there are too many wrong people influencing Streetwear, & they are there just by business chance & luck. There are many more people out there that do so much more that get no recognition…so I will not give anyone credit, because as I have said, there is no one person, but I will say this…My eldest son Che. I love to watch him find his style & adapt what he likes into his groove. That gives me more inspiration & influence than any label out there.

Splash! Winterfestival!!!
Splash! krijgt een Nederlands broertje! Het grootste hiphopfestival van Europa vindt elke zomer plaats in Duitsland, maar zal dit jaar ons land gelukkig maken met een wintereditie en volgend jaar met een zomereditie.
Op 27 oktober zullen beide zalen van de Amsterdamse Melkweg gevuld worden met een dikke lading hiphopacts, waarbij de meest indrukwekkende artiesten uit de Amerikaanse undergroundwereld zullen aantreden voor de Splash! Wintereditie.
Van ijzersterke emcees als Sean Price (volksheld van de Boot Camp Clik), Canibus (raplegende is terug van weggeweest) en Joell Ortiz (de nieuwste Aftermath-parel van Dr. Dre) tot gerenommeerde veteranen als Grand Puba (Brand Nubian) en K-Solo (Hit Squad). Niemand minder dan Murs (de ondergrondse trots van de westkust) completeert samen met Black Milk en Guilty Simpson (de toekomst van Detroit) en Butta Verses (gelieerd aan De La Soul) de Amerikaanse lineup. Als slagroom op de taart staat er ook nog één hoogwaardige binnenlandse act op de planken: DuvelDuvel.
Het geheel wordt gehost door de komische legende uit New York: Biz Markie. Het eerste Splash! Festival wordt afgesloten middels een fantastische afterparty met deejays Edzon, SP, Lil Vic, Shaft en Biz Markie die nog even blijft hangen!

Met o.a. Kool Keith, Duvel, DJ MK, Mr. Wix in het Haagse Korzo TheaterHet TodaysArt Festival, dat plaatsvindt op 21 en 22 september 2007 op 25 locaties in het centrum van Den Haag, maakt zich elk jaar weer sterk voor hiphop. In de eerste plaats vanwege de continue vernieuwing binnen dit genre, maar ook vanwege de levensstijl die ermee samengaat. Daarnaast hebben kunstvormen als street art, turntablism en breakdance voor een groot deel hun bestaan te danken aan de hiphopcultuur. In het Korzo Theater kan de festivalbezoeker op vrijdag genieten van een uitgebreid film- en muziekprogramma samengesteld in samenwerking met het Black Soil International Hiphop Film Festival. Helaas door de ramadan is het moeilijk om bij iemand te blijven pitten,je wilt natuurlijk liever thuis wakker worden,of in mij geval wakker blijven om te eten en roken en zo..dus ga m missen!voor de peeps die gaan:veel plezier!

In april van dit jaar was mc, producer en Def-Jux-labelbaas Jaime 'El-P' Meline in Nederland om zijn tweede solo-album I'll Sleep When You're Dead van een passende release te voorzien. Zowel die plaat als het optreden in de Melkweg werden goed ontvangen, en het wordt dus waarschijnlijk helemaal geen straf om de held van menig indie-hiphopper volgende week dinsdag alweer aan het werk te zien, in Utrecht ditmaal. State belde bij wijze van opwarmertje nog even naar Brooklyn voor een update, El-P trachtte peuzelend aan een ongeïdentificeerde maaltijd zo goed mogelijk antwoord te geven.
Vijf maanden geleden werd I'll Sleep When You're Dead door artiest en interviewer nog onderworpen aan een uitgebreide tekstuele analyse - terecht, want er is veel te ontdekken aan die plaat - dus dat kunnen we dit keer overslaan. Prangender is op dit moment de vraag waarom een druk baasje met drie functie-omschrijvingen binnen een half jaar terugkeert naar Nederland. Zou het dan toch dat rondzingende gerucht zijn dat artiesten tegenwoordig zo weinig cd's verkopen dat ze hun geld vooral met touren moeten binnenhalen? "Nee, man. Ik heb altijd veel getourd, de gevolgen van illegaal downloaden hebben niet zoveel veranderd aan die persoonlijke drang. Ik verdien er bovendien niet zo gek veel mee. Heb je enig idee hoeveel het kost om een groepje mensen de oceaan over te tillen en hier een tijdje te laten rondtrekken?" De inkomsten komen dus vooral uit het label en productieklussen voor anderen. "Optreden doe ik om contact maken met de luisteraars van mijn muziek, om aandacht te vestigen op dat album en de fans waar dan ook liefde te geven."Voor hysterie rondom illegaal downloaden ben je bij El-P sowieso aan het verkeerde adres. Net als veel andere specialistische labels met een trouwe schare volgelingen (zoals het Engelse Warp was Def Jux jaren geleden al bezig legale, betaalde downloads op de markt te zetten terwijl de majors er net achter kwamen dat hun muziek uitgewisseld werd. Die pioniersfunctie heeft het label geen windeieren gelegd. "Digitaal is inmiddels een gigantisch onderdeel van de omzet voor vrijwel alle labels, ik schat dat in op 20 tot 30 procent in het algemeen. Ik heb zelf altijd het idee gehad dat het veel beter werkt om met de technologische ontwikkelingen mee te denken, dan er tegen in te gaan onder het mom van 'iemand probeert van me te stelen!'. Zo'n strijd verlies je toch. Zo lang er een manier blijft bestaan om genoeg geld te verdienen om van rond te komen en creatief bezig te blijven, ben ik tevreden: het preciese formaat maakt me dan niet uit."

Het klinkt lekker tegendraads en eigengereid, maar ergens moet het toch knagen dat een dure en gelikte video, zoals die bij eerste single Smithereens, op weinig tv-schermen te zien zal zijn. El-P in de rol van gevangene, in karakteristiek oranje overall, gemarteld op Guantanamo Bay: clipzenders zullen hun adverteerders dat niet aandoen. "Nee, MTV durft dat niet aan", reageert hij lachend. "Ik wist van te voren wel dat ik met die video geen commerciële kanalen zou bereiken, maar de aandrang om een mooie video én een statement te maken kon ik niet weerstaan. Het voelt ook alsof ik te veel tijd en energie in mijn muziek steek om daar dan vervolgens een of ander compromis-bullshit-clipje aan te plakken. Daar komt nog bij dat ik niet meer geloof dat airplay op televisie nog erg belangrijk is voor je bereik, tenminste niet onder jongeren. Een veelbekeken video op internet heeft meer effect dan eentje op MTV."Het aanhalen van één specifieke video blijkt genoeg aanleiding voor een uitwijding over een favoriet El-P-stokpaardje: de hypocriete houding van veel Amerikanen ten opzichte van massamedia. "We zijn een raar land, dat zal je niet ontgaan zijn: de hoeveelheid dubbele standaarden is enorm. Beelden die bijvoorbeeld in één context acceptabel zijn worden ineens schandalig in een andere, en met deze video wou ik de beelden en concepten die mij worden aangereikt door Fox News, politici enzovoort omvormen tot een eigen visie, met een artistieke twist eraan, van iemand zonder politieke verbindtenissen." Hoewel hij zich overduidelijk druk maakt om zulke misstanden ziet hij de toekomst somber in - de overgang naar een andere president en regering zal geen verbetering brengen. "Geen van die kandidaten wil eigenlijk verandering, ook de democraten niet. Die verkiezingen zijn een soort toneelstuk, een ceremonie. Het politieke proces is dood hier."Voordat het karakter van paranoïde sombermans de overhand krijgt schakelen we over op een ander onderwerp: 's mans professionele leven als artiest en labelbaas. De periode tussen solodebuut Fantastic Damage (2002) en I'll Sleep When You're Dead hield hij zich grotendeels op in de luwte, nu staat hij als solo-artiest weer in de spotlights. Dat moet wennen zijn. "Ach, er zat wel bijna vijf jaar tussen, maar twee daarvan ben ik bezig geweest met touren. Sinds mijn achttiende ben ik daar mee bezig, dat is zo'n beetje tweede natuur. Die andere drie jaar, achter de schermen, waren uitzonderlijk in mijn leven. Er zijn eigenlijk maar twee dingen die ik leuk vind in de muziekwereld, en die zijn een plaat opnemen en optreden. De rest is eigenlijk verschrikkelijk." Harde woorden, maar ze gelden toch echt voor het geesteskindje dat hij in 1999 oprichtte samen met Amaechi Uzoigwe. "Def Jux runnen doe ik zo goed en zo kwaad als het gaat, ik heb nog steeds niet helemaal uitgevonden hoe het écht moet, maar er zijn tenminste wel een hoop goede mensen om me heen die me helpen. Kijk, als ik het allemaal uit handen zou kunnen geven zonder dat de artiesten op het label daar last van zouden hebben zou ik het doen, het is geen prestige-onderneming en het is geen hobby van me. Ik ben er ooit ingestapt om een podium voor mijn eigen muziek te creëren, niet om zakenman te worden. Maar goed, we leven niet in een ideale wereld, en ik voel me te verantwoordelijk om het uit handen te geven. De situatie zoals die nu is is werkbaar, daar neem ik genoegen mee. Als ik maar eens in de zoveel jaar kan blijven toeren is dat voor mij genoeg om mijn verstand niet te verliezen."Een andere voorwaarde om geestelijk gezond te blijven is volgens El-P strenge zelfdiscipline bij het uitkiezen van nieuwe projecten. "Mijn eerstvolgende release wordt een instrumentale versie van ISWYD, voor daarna heb ik nog geen plannen. Het enige criterium is dat het muzikaal een uitdaging betekent, iets dat ik nog niet eerder heb gedaan." De abstracte maar geslaagde jazz-hiphopfusie van High Water (2004), gemaakt met pianist Matthew Shipp, is dus geen uitzonderlijk uistapje. "Precies, dat vond ik een geslaagde trip naar onbekend terrein. Zo werkt het ook met productieklussen die ik doe voor anderen. Veel opkomende producers in dit land komen op een kenmerkende sound uit en verkopen die vervolgens aan iedereen met een zak geld, met als gevolg dat als ze niet zo heel boeiend meer zijn als ze eenmaal een echt eigen project uitbrengen. Ik kies ervoor om mijn hiphopsound ook daadwerkelijk voor mezelf en beste vrienden te houden." De gemiddelde hiphopliefhebber zal zijn naam dan ook niet snel aantreffen in de cd-boekjes van artiesten buiten Def Jux. Het afgelopen jaar maakten wel indie- en rockacts als Nine Inch Nails, Beck, The Mars Volta en TV on the Radio, toch niet de armsten ter wereld, gebruik van zijn diensten. "Ik zou nog steeds liever alleen mijn eigen muziek produceren, maar op deze manier krijg ik in ieder geval brood op de plank."Een makkelijke manier om wat extra brood op die plank te toveren zou een re-release van het legendarische Company Flow-debuut Funcrusher Plus zijn: afgelopen zomer was het tien jaar geleden dat die plaat uitkwam, een gemiddelde platenmaatschappij zou het aangrijpen voor een speciale uitgave. "Wij bezitten zelf de masters en de rechten, dus het zou kunnen. We waren dat ook wel van plan, maar geheel in de rommelige, slordige stijl van Company Flow is dat er niet van gekomen." Lachend: "Dus nu wordt het een speciale editie ter ere van het elfjarig jubileum, en eigenlijk past dat ook wel weer bij ons." Nieuw werk, waarover geruchten zo nu en dan de kop opsteken, hoeven we echter nog niet te verwachten. "Big Juss en ik hebben nog steeds regelmatig contact, maar concrete muziek is er nog niet uit komen rollen. Helaas."Sinds kort moet dus de eerste nieuwe soloplaat in vijf jaar gepromoot worden, en de functie van labelbaas ligt El-P sowieso het minst. Het is niet ondenkbaar dat een aantal artiesten op Def Jux zich daardoor achtergesteld voelden en vertrokken - Cannibal Ox en RJD2 deden dat recentelijk. "Volgens mij is dat niet zo. Er is de afgelopen jaren een behoorlijke hoeveelheid artiesten geweest die ik op Def Jux wilde tekenen, maar waar ik eigenlijk geen tijd meer voor had om ze serieuze aandacht als labelbaas te geven. Dan kies ik er ook voor om ze niet te tekenen. De artiesten die gaandeweg het label hebben verlaten hadden daar andere redenenen voor. Cannibal Ox hadden we net weer getekend, na een hiaat van een paar jaar, en toen besloten ze wederom uit elkaar te gaan. Meer kan ik daar niet over zeggen, maar verwacht daar de komende tijd in ieder geval niets meer van - ze bestaan simpelweg niet meer. Wat RJD2 betreft: hij had het idee dat, vanwege de nieuwe richting die hij insloeg als singer-songwriter, het een verstandige beslissing zou zijn om over te stappen op een label (XL) dat ervaring heeft met dat soort muziek. Gezien de hoeveelheid geld die hij bij ons verdiend heeft betwijfel ik dat hij ontevreden was met de behandeling door Def Jux." Van de artiesten die nog wel op het label vertoeven hebben Aesop Rock en Rob Sonic nu of binnenkort nieuwe platen uit, je zou zeggen dat dat een mooie mogelijkheid biedt hen mee te slepen op tournee. "Op zich wel, maar Aes is samen met Rob Sonic door Amerika aan het trekken, zij hebben hun eigen plan. Bovendien is het des te leuker om slechts af en toe bij elkaar het podium op te duiken, dat maakt het wat specialer." Voorlopig zul je het dus moeten doen met de gebruikelijke sidekicks: dj Mr. Dibbs, mc The Mighty Quin en toetsenist Wilder Zoby. Hoe dat uitpakt zie je komende dinsdag vanaf 21 uur in Tivoli de Helling, de voortekenen zijn in ieder geval goed.
